Резюме. Съществува твърдение, че една от най-популярните снимки на Васил Левски е направена в Копривщица. То се основава на мемоарното свидетелство на Васил Караиванов – братовчед на Левски от Карлово и участник в революционното движение. Настоящата кратка статия представя резултата от един опит да се потърси допълнителна информация, която би могла да потвърди достоверността на изказаното от В. Караиванов мнение, че една от снимките на Левски е направена в Копривщица.

TO THE ISSUE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT OF VASIL LEVSKI FROM 1870

Abstract. Оne of the most popular photos of Vasil Levski is claimed to have been taken in Koprivshtitsa. This opinion is based on the memorial testimony of Vasil Karaivanov – Levski’s cousin from Kalrovo and a participant in the revolutionary movement. This short article presents the result of an attempt some additional information to be found, which could confirm the credibility of Karaivanov’s opinion that one of the pictures of Levski was taken in Koprivshtitsa.

Резюме. Настоящата статия представя една непозната фотография от периода непосредствено след Освобождението на България, изобразяваща колективен портрет на членовете на Европейската комисия за организиране на Източна Румелия. Фотодокументът е създаден извън ателие, в естествена среда и е от ранните примери за репортажна фотография, свързана с обществено- политически събития по българските земи.

THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION FOR EASTERN RUMELIA: AN UNKNOWN PHOTO DOCUMENT IN THE GETTY RESEARCH INSTITUTE’S ARCHIVES

Abstract. This paper presents an unknown photograph from the time immediately after the Liberation of Bulgaria. It depicts a collective portrait of the members of the European Commission for the organization of Eastern Roumelia. The photo document is created outside a studio in a natural environment and could be defined as one of the early examples of reportage photography on socio-political affairs that took place on the Bulgarian lands.

Резюме. Целта на настоящата статия е да съчетае икономическата теория, касаеща предприемачеството, с отделни казуси от епохата на Българското възраждане. Акцент е поставен върху условията и предпоставките за „раждането“ на предприемаческия елит през XVIII – XIX в. Отделено е място на факторите, оказващи влияние върху активността на стопанските дейци. Основният извод е, че съчетанието на благоприятна външна среда и подходящи лични качества обуславят появата на хора с предприемчив дух. С други думи казано, възрожденските предприемачи се раждат, но и се създават чрез придобития опит и познание.

PREREQUISITES FOR THE EMERGENCE AND FACTORS OF THE ENTREPRENEURIAL ELITE’S ACTIVITY DURING THE BULGARIAN NATIONAL REVIVAL PERIOD (INTRODUCTORY REMARKS)

Abstract. The purpose of this article is to combine the economic theory of entrepreneurship with different case studies regarding commercial entrepreneurship during the Bulgarian National Revival period. Emphasis is also placed on the conditions and prerequisites for the “birth” of the entrepreneurial elite in the 18th- 19th centuries. On the other hand, attention is paid on the factors influencing the economic activity of the Revival figures. The main conclusion is that the combination of a favorable external environment and appropriate personal qualities make possible the appearance of people with enterprising spirit. In other words, Bulgarian Revival entrepreneurs are born, but they are also made through the accumulated experience and knowledge.

Резюме. Затворите са част от управленската система в ислямските земи през Средновековието. Макар сведенията за организацията и методите им на работа да не са много, тези учреждения заслужават внимание, тъй като спомагат за изясняването на общата институционална картина. В статията е проследено възникването на първите ислямски затвори. Този преглед служи както за формиране на начални впечатления, така и за основа на последвалия анализ. Централно място заема въпросът за затворите в арабска Сицилия (IX – XI век). Важен принос е събирането на едно място на сведения от различни по език, вид и време на създаване исторически извори. Внимателният им прочит, съчетан със съпоставителен анализ, позволяват да се направят изводи за характеристиките и местоположението на сицилианските затвори. Сравнението със затворите в останалите ислямски земи през същия период показва общи черти.Това позволява да се заключи, че наказателните учреждения на острова следват и работят по добре установен модел.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MEDIEVAL ISLAMIC PRISONS IN SICILY (9TH-11THCENTURY)

Abstract.The medieval prisons are part of the Islamic governing system as in the Near East as in the Magreb. The sources about their organization and working methods are rare and straggling. Whatever, medieval Islamic prisons deserve an attention because they are connected withthe general institutional environment in the Islamic lands. This article surveys the Islamic prisons in Sicily in the period 9th-11th century. It begins with a review of the emergence of thefirst Islamic prisons. This information serves as both forming initial impressions and a basis of the subsequent analysis. An important contribution of the article is the collected information from different by language, type and timehistorical sources. Their careful readings, coupled with a compare analysis, allow us to draw conclusions about the characteristics and location of the medieval Sicilian prisons. Comparison with the prisons in the other Islamic lands over the same historical period shows us common features. This makes it possible to conclude that the penal institutions on the island follow and work on a well-established model.

Резюме. Още от Петър I, дори и по-рано – съпоставяйки Киевска и Московска Рус, Русия търси себе си. Тя се възражда като държава много пъти, и все различна, но въпросът тя Изток ли е, Запад ли е, или нещо различно, колкото и да е стар, остава. В много отношения Русия е Европа и нейното място е в Европа, но начинът ѝ на управление все я тегли на Изток.

RUSSIAN REVOLUTIONS – EAST AND WEST

Abstract. Russia has always been making efforts to define itself, since the rule of Peter I, and even earlier, by comparing itself to Kievan Rus and the Grand Duchy of Moscow. Russia has always managed to revive itself as a country, though always different, but the question remained – was Russia the East or the West, or was it something else, no matter how old it was? In all respects, Russia is Europe and its place is in Europe but the way it is governed always pushes the country toward the East.

TZVETAN TODOROV: THE WEST DEFINED AND DEFINING THE EAST

Abstract. This study explores how the West defines the East in the works of Tzvetan Todorov and how the definition of the West itself shifts with the discovery of the New World in the XVIth century. We will take as an example the impression of French travelers in Bulgaria in the XIXth century in order to show that the image of the East gets often misunderstood by the West. With the discovery of America, the definition of what West means changes. These definitions are fluid and modifiable and are essential in order to understand how later historical interactions between East and West are carried out.
