AN INVESTIGATION OF OFFICIAL CORRUPTIONIN OTTOMAN EGYPT:
PROCESSES AND DOCUMENTS OF OTTOMANADMINISTRATION

Abstract. The investigation in question is recorded in a series of thirty-eight register entries on a case of financial malfeasance in recently-conquered Ottoman Egypt that was investigated by officials from Ottoman Syria. This case appears in the oldest existing mühimme defteri, a register of important affairs of the Ottoman Empire, and provides detailed information about how the Ottomans governed their provinces. It lists many of the taxes and revenues collected by the Ottomans and discusses the most important treasury personnel in the province and the documents they created. It also describes how the Ottoman state worked to control those personnel even at a distance and to induce these officials to adhere to concepts of just imperial rule. The article describes the issues in the case and identifies the provincial officials involved in the investigation, the documents they were supposed to collect or create, and the procedures they were commanded to follow. The conclusion examines the implications of the case for our understanding of the place of Syria and Egypt within the wider Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century. This episode presents an instance of the Ottoman integration of newly conquered lands in a period when records are fairly plentiful (in contrast to the conquest of Rumeli, where most of our evidence comes from chronicles written at a later date). Beyond that, this case illuminates the whole issue of how an empire operates and challenges the stereotype of general Ottoman oppression of the conquered territories.

Два очерка по историческа антропология

Abstract.. Настоящият текст съдържа елементи от историята на град Пирдоп и околностите му през ХІХ в. Проучени са в детайли сметките на пирдопската община от ръката на местния първенец чорбаджи Симеон, който две десетилетия е водил кондиката на общината. Тези сметки съдържат оборудването на църквата и училището, както и функцията на църковната община като микрокредитна институция. Изследвано e и ядрото от влиятелни родове – водачи на църковната община. Изследвани са и по-късни предосвобожденски етнографски материали от неговия съименник – учителя Симеон Алдов (Сърданов), ситуирани в социално-икономическия, „патримониален“, екологичен и географски контекст на региона. Защриховани са разбойничеството, локалните политически размирици и последствията им в рамките на един холистичен подход в духа на поместните изследвания.

XIX CENTURY CHURCH COMMUNITY ACCOUNTS AND FOLK NARRATIVES FROM THE TOWN OF PIRDOP
(A Diptych of Essays in Historical Anthropology)
Abstract. The text contains elements from the history of the town of Pirdop and its` surroundings during the 19-th century. The codex of the local church community has been studied in detail. The accounting within was noted for two decades by the hand of the local notable, Simon. It starts from the decoration of the new church and further on contains data on the functioning of the church community as a microcredit institution. The core of local notable families was examined, as they were the leaders of the church community. More recent pre-Liberation ethnographic documentation, gathered by the teacher Simeon Aldov (Serdanov) was examined from a general anthropological, „patrimonial“, socioeconomical, ecological and geographical point of view in the frame of the region. Robbery and crime, local political unrest and their consequences have been mentioned in a cholistic perspective, in the spirit of local and regional studies.

Abstract.. В настоящата работа са сравнени титлите на някои висши сановници в Българското царство със съответстващите титли на високопоставени служители във Влахия и Молдова. Използваните извори са най-вече влашките и молдовските владетелски документи от ХІV – ХV в., когато българо-византийското влияние върху държавната уредба на Дунавските княжества е най-силно. Въпреки развитието на функциите на сановниците във Влахия и Молдова в произведения от ХVІІ – ХVІІІ в. (творбите на Евлия Челеби и Димитрий Кантемир) също може да се види сходството на техните задължения със задълженията на византийските и българските дворцови служители.

THE LINK BETWEEN THE TITLES OF SOME DIGNITARIES IN THE BULGARIAN KINGDOM AND IN THE DANUBIAN PRINCIPALITIES
Abstract. The article aims to compare the titles of some dignitaries in the Bulgarian kingdom and the corresponding titles of the dignitaries in Wallachia and Moldova. The cited sources are mostly Wallachian and Moldovan documents from XIV–XV century, when the Byzantine-Bulgarian influence on the state regulations of the Danubian principalities is strongest.

Absract. Статията е посветена на първото норманско нашествие на Балканския полуостров (1081 – 1085). Фокусът е поставен върху дипломатическата реакция на Византийската империя спрямо норманската опасност. Въз основа на разнообразна изворова база са разгледани неуспешните опити за сключване на нормано-византийски съюз, скрепен чрез брак, и са откроени ключовите моменти във военната кампания на Робер Гискар на Балканите.

FIRST NORMAN INVASION OF THE BALKANS (1081 – 1085) AND DIPLOMATIC ACTIVITIES OF THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE
Abstract. The article examine the first Norman invasion of the Balkans (1081 – 1085). The focus is on the diplomatic reaction of the Byzantine Empire to the Norman danger. The unsuccessful attempts to negotiate a Norman-Byzantine alliance are analyzed. The key moments of the military campaign of Robert Guiscard in the Balkans are highlighted.

Absract. През 1809 г. британската общественост е скандализирана от аферата на Йоркския херцог с лондончанката Мери Ан Кларк. Случаят придобива такава известност, че измества всички други теми във Великобритания за повече от три месеца. Репутацията на Хановерския принц е накърнена много тежко от сведенията, изнесени от неговата бивша любовница г-жа Кларк. Тъй като вторият син на Джордж III е и главнокомандващ на британската армия по това време, таблоидната история става политически проблем, който засяга цялата нация. Артикулират се версии за корупция, разврат и интриги, които пряко се отнасят до интегритета и моралните устои на националните лидери. Въпреки това развръзката на аферата претърпява драматичен и неочакван обрат.

THE TREACHEROUS TESTIMONY OF MARY ANN CLARK AND THE DUKE OF YORK SCANDAL, 1809
Abstract. In 1809 the British public was scandalized by the affair of the Duke of York with Marry Anne Clarke. Rumors of the affair spread so widely that the story was articulated very widely in Britain for more than three months. The reputation of the Hanoverian prince was badly damaged by the testimony given forward by Mrs. Clarke. While the second son of King George III was Commander in Chief of the British Army at that time, the story was not only a public scandal, but rather a political crisis for the whole nation. News about corruption, debauchery and intrigues flooded the press, and this whole matter put the integrity of the national leaders to the challenge. Nevertheless, the outcome of the affair underwent a dramatic and unexpected turn.

Abstract. The article highlights the main difficulties and problems that Bulgarian teachers face abroad, particularly in the US, in bringing up patriotic feelings in children born and growing outside of Bulgaria. Also, the author shares her good pedagogical practices that she apply in one of the biggest Bulgarian schools in Chicago, USA to deal with the difficult task to teach their students to care about Bulgaria.
