2011 – International Year of Chemistry
Резюме. This paper is written to make popular the International Year of Chemistry 2011, and to stimulate Bulgarian chemists to get involved in activities aimed at the main goals of this world event: increase the public appreciation of chemistry in meeting world needs, increase interest of young people in chemistry, generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry, celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Mme. Curie Nobel Prize and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the International Association of Chemical Societies.

The Quantity „Amount of Substance“ and the Unity „Mole“: New Trends
Резюме. The definitions of the quantity “amount of substance” and its SI unity “the mole” and their use in chemistry have been discussed. The new definition of the unity “mole”, proposed by The Bureau International des Poids et Mesures and supported by the IUPAC Interdivisional Committee on Terminology, Nomenclature and Symbols, is presented. It is based on the fixed value of the Avogadro constant and not on the fixed value of Аr(12C).

Nomenclature of Coordination Compounds: IUPAC Recommendations 2005
Резюме. The paper includes the most important recommendations of IUPAC in the nomenclature of coordination compounds. The popularization of the proposed rules for construction of formulae and names is important since in the last revision of the inorganic nomenclature (2005) important changes in the area of coordination compounds were made. Numerous examples illustrate the proposed rules.

Scientist and Promoter of Chemistry: Doc. Kalojan Manolov
Резюме. In the year of chemistry is well to note the contribution of outstanding Bulgarian chemists to the development of chemical education in Bulgaria. Among them is Dr. Kalojan Manolov (b. 1930) from Plovdiv. He is among the most successful populizers of chemical science in our country. His book “Great Chemists” (in four volumes), translated into several languages, undoubtedly played a role as a calyst for the interest of many young peaple to science and research. In this article, the Chemistry teacher Maria Dobreva offers a description of the case and work of Kalojan Manolov.

Didactics of Chemistry as an Academic Subject: Doc. Svoboda Beneva
Резюме. Doc. Svoboda Beneva (b. 1940) is a specialist in teachers training. She was a tutor of many Bulgarian prospective teachers in Chemistry. Here is a narrative for Beneva’s life and work activities as have been seen by one of her students – Maria Dobreva, now a teacher in Chemistry.

Student Perception of Educational Goals as a Factor of Efficient Learning
Резюме. The State Educational Core Requirements and the Study Programmes are basic statutory documents, which describe the knowledge, skills and competences that students should attain. These statutory documents are considered as an opportunity to enhance student motivation and participation in learning activities. An approach to realize this idea is proposed: teacher-students interaction in the classroom is organized in a way to assure the perception and rationalization of educational goals by the students. An empirical study involving 284 pupils (10. grade) from different types of schools has been carried out in Chemistry and Environmental Protection school subject. The perception of the educational goals by the students leads to an increase of students’ achievements and long-term knowledge.

Non-formal and Informal Education/Learning: Development in a Historical Perspective
Резюме. In studies of Lifelong learning and its components, the concepts of Non-formal and Informal Education/Learning are often presented as relatively new and contradictory. Seeking to explain the contradictions existed, the concepts of Non-formal and Informal Education/Learning are considered historically from 1916 till now, emphasizing on their emergence, interrelationships, reasons for their usage, changing in their importance and trends in their further development.

Study of the Structure and Polarity of Amino Acids in High-School Teaching with the Help of Computer Programs
Резюме. The protein amino acid structure and polarity can be studied also from the aspect of acid-base balance, in correspondence with the number of atoms and nucleons, making use of computers and computer programs within biochemistry teaching. Beside a conventional approach, which is used for the classification of amino acids (the high school level), a new approach can be presented considering their polarity and structure. It has been proved in a school experiment that students acquire better knowledge if the topic is interpreted from this new aspect, based on an utterly innovative and interdisciplinary approach.

A Microwave Based Low Cost, Eco-Friendly Device for High Temperature Reactions in Undergraduate Laboratories
Резюме. Microwave heating is receiving a considerable attention by researchers all over the world. When comparing it to conventional heating, a different way of transferring energy from the source to the sample is the main benefit of utilizing microwave energy. Silicon carbide is a good microwave susceptor. When exposed to microwaves in a household oven, it heats up rapidly and becomes red hot having a temperature above 1000oC. This fact has been utilized to design a model for carrying out elevated temperature reactions in a microwave oven to replace furnace and flame. This quick, safe, environment friendly and trouble-free experiment can be utilized to carry out high temperature reactions in undergraduate laboratories effortlessly.
